Tailored Travel
Over 15 days, from the low-hum of Chengdu's basin to the thin air of the Qinghai Plateau. You will travel north by rail into the mountains of Jiuzhaigou, where water is not just water but a language of blues and greens. You will cross the grasslands of Ruoergai, where the Yellow River bends before it even knows it is a river. You will walk through the stone village of Zhagana, and stand inside the great monastic colleges of Labrang and Kumbum, where young monks debate philosophy in courtyards older than many nations. You will learn the names of minerals from a Thangka painter in Tongren—azurite, cinnabar, gold leaf—and watch them grind pigments the same way their teachers' teachers did. You will watch the blue of Qinghai Lake shift with the light, from a place that leaves no footprint behind.
Drift across the blue-green travertine lakes of Jiuzhaigou, where water color is a lesson in geology
Cross the Ruoergai Grassland, where yaks, herders' tents, and black-necked cranes share one of China's great wetlands
Walk the world's longest prayer wheel corridor at Labrang, the largest monastery of the Amdo region
Stand on the Locke Road, tracing botanist Joseph Rock's route through canyons, passes, and meadows
Watch Qinghai Lake shift from cobalt to turquoise, and sit in silence at its sacred shore
Grind mineral pigments with a Regong master and color your own Thangka outline in Tongren
Arrive in Chengdu and check into your hotel. At just 500 meters above sea level, Chengdu is the ideal gateway to the Tibetan Plateau—a place where your body can settle before the altitude begins to climb.
In the late afternoon, join a welcome gathering. Your travel manager will walk you through the next 15 days with a map of the upper Yellow River, tracing the route from the Min Mountains through the Ruoergai Grassland, the monastic towns of Gannan, and onward to Qinghai Lake and the Thangka art of Tongren. If you arrive early, take a short walk to People's Park, where locals sip tea and practice taichi—Chengdu's famous slow pace, best observed from a bamboo chair under old trees. Dinner is a mild Sichuan meal, spice adjusted to preference.
